World news is the term in the media for news about a global subject or event. It can refer to reporting done by foreign correspondents (full-time reporters who work for a specific news source), or – more commonly these days – to reports gathered and compiled by news agencies that have no permanent staff in the field.
The bulk of major news agency services consists of foreign news. News agencies prepare hard news stories and feature articles that can be used by other newspapers, radio and television stations, and – in the past – by wire services (which originally relied on telegraphy but now often use the Internet). They usually sell the articles in bulk to news organizations; individuals, analysts and intelligence agencies may also subscribe.
From a remote island prison to a hidden ocean smuggling route, these are the stories making headlines today. An artist uses trace samples such as fingerprints and DNA to catch a jewelry thief in this docuseries. Plus, modern-day activists echo calls of the suffragettes who fought for women’s rights. And, after Haiti’s 2010 earthquake, residents rebuilt a new city on the ruins of their old one. All that and more in this month’s World news.
